Why is there so much buzz about the HCG Diet? Is it dangerous? Or perhaps just ineffective? These questions were on my mind as I set up an interview with Jennifer Margolies, the Program Director for Fast Weight Loss Centers in Dallas, TX, to discuss the hotly debated HCG diet. Thankfully, she agreed to chat and share her experiences with the HCG diet and other medical weight loss plans.
After some small talk, I dove into the interview with the question that intrigued me the most. Although I’ve never tried the HCG diet myself and probably never will, I’m very interested in the debate surrounding it. People seem to be either very for or very against it. I wanted to hear Jennifer’s thoughts on why the HCG diet sparks such strong opinions. Her candid and balanced response was surprisingly refreshing.
Jennifer explained that weight loss is more complex than just shedding pounds. Many dealing with weight issues are facing several challenges. Some skeptics of the HCG diet might feel their personal weight struggles wouldn’t be properly addressed by such a strict plan. However, she believes that trying the HCG diet might change their perception, as it’s more comprehensive than it seems. She mentioned that there are different types of HCG products available: injections, which she believes are the most effective, and homeopathic drops, which can be unsafe and ineffective. The controversy might be more about the drops than the injections. Because the HCG diet involves very low calorie intake, it’s naturally subject to medical scrutiny. That’s why she advises consulting a physician before starting the diet. Ultimately, it’s about finding what works best for each individual. Some may prefer a quick, focused weight loss approach like HCG, while others might opt for a less intense plan with a higher calorie intake over a longer period.
I then asked Jennifer how the HCG diet has evolved over the years. I was curious if the diet plan had remained rigid or if different advocates had adapted it in various ways. Her response shed some light on the subject.
Jennifer shared that the HCG diet dates back to the 1950s and was developed by Dr. A.T.W. Simeons. Recent research has explored the HCG program more deeply. Dr. Simeons believed that the body becomes immune to HCG after 40 days, which is why each cycle lasts 40 days. Dr. Emma, from Dr. Oz’s show, has conducted significant research suggesting physiological changes can continue beyond the 40-day mark. Their program sticks to 40 days because they find people need a mental break and time to stabilize their weight afterward. If someone wants to continue, they recommend a six-week break between cycles. Dr. Emma also adjusts the caloric intake based on the person and extends the cycle beyond 40 days if needed. Advancements have been made since Dr. Simeons’ time in the 1950s.
As the holiday season was approaching, I asked Jennifer whether the HCG Diet could work with “cheat days.” Her answer was quite clear.
Jennifer felt that the HCG Diet isn’t very compatible with holiday indulgences. If you’re on the HCG Core Diet, consistency is key, meaning you can’t really stray from it. During the post-protocol phase, or stabilization period, you can enjoy lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables – like the white meat of a turkey breast with green beans. There are options within the diet guidelines. However, if you’re planning to start the diet, it’s best not to do it right before a holiday or vacation, where sticking to the plan would be challenging.
Grateful for her openness, I squeezed in one final question about her favorite HCG-friendly recipe.
Jennifer shared a simple but tasty salad dressing recipe. It’s equal parts Splenda (or Truvia), water, and white vinegar – about a quarter cup of each. This dressing is a great, tangy option even when not on a diet. Creativity is needed while on the HCG cycle, and there are ideas online, but her program sticks to stricter guidelines than some, so not everything out there fits their plan.
After getting that last bit of advice, I wrapped up the interview, thankful for Jennifer’s time and honesty. The brief conversation gave me a clearer picture of the HCG Diet and a newfound respect for those who support it.
